Finally there is a GIS system that works on a fully synchronized manner with a GPS. Take waypoints and tracks in the field with the DeLorme PN-40 GPS, and load them directly into the X-Map software via an USB-cable. No need to convert formats! No need for any other software, except for Windows.
Data forms or questionnaires with drop-downs can also be created by the X-Map software for use on the PN-40 GPS when collecting waypoints.
Example:
A botanist can load a form with a drop-down list of plant species into his PN-40 with also the option to insert the soil type in which a particular plant grows. All his waypoints together with the plant species and the soil type can then be loaded directly into X-Map at his office. So, no need for a paper notepad anymore!
X-Map is also able to convert hard copies of maps to geo-referenced electronic ones with the help of a scanner. If your camera’s time is synchronized with the time of your PN-40 handheld while you are logging a track, the photos taken during that time, can be geo-tagged onto a map at the exact place as where they have been taken.
